When Lucy started talking about teeth in the intro it felt like there were two Russes in the call

I completely related to Lucy's preflight/flight process. I get a bunch of books, games, movies and shows together and then don't use any. I lose all motivation once I'm on a plane now. My main activity is watching the movie the person in the seat in front of me to the side is watching...

Yeah, that's me as well if the flight is not overnight/over 5 hrs or so. Even bought AR glasses last year saying they'd be great for flights. I do use them, but almost exclusively laying in bed watching tv.

Hey guys, good episode -- and I guess I understand why y'all don't feel comfortable doing best romanceable character topic, but at the same time, just remember that the subscribers who are going to hear the episode are the ones who voted for that topic, and if we didn't want to hear you guys talk about it/do the bracket.... then we wouldn't have voted it as the #1 choice lmao

Just to be clear, speaking for me personally, and this wasn't meant as a dig at all, love the show, appreciate you guys & still looking forward to every ep

Could not disagree more! I want a good episode, so that means what the hosts think will make the best conversation or are most comfortable or excited talking about. To your point, if I care about the topic more than the hosts, then I wouldn’t sub this podcast!

While I agree that if that’s what most people are interested in, then that’s what most people will want to hear, a lot of the comments were people saying they’d be happy with multiple topics, and romanceable character is one that screams “great idea until you get to the execution stage.”

Expand full comment

So basically... it sounds like you actually don't disagree with the main point that my entire comment was making: the topic got the most votes b/c that's the topic the subscribers wanted to listen to (which I think is not that disagreeable?)

Hi Besties! I'm a professional stage manager and long time listener and wanted to chime in on the Hamilton thing - if Lucy had 'early tickets', it's likely she was seeing a preview. During previews, the design team will watch from the house and then make edits the next day, before the following preview. So whoever was on their laptop was probably a designer or associate designer! That being said, it's pretty bad form to distrurb the paying audience that much. Just wanted to share since a lot of people don't know much about what happens off stage!

Lucy is an S tier guest. Always love to hear Plantes take on sports games, topspin 2k25 downloading as I type. The real rainmaker of this episode was Plante’s story about the woman reading the news on her iPad at a screening of Manchester by the sea, one of the most depraved and hilarious things I’ve ever heard on a podcast. A chilling indictment on the current human condition. There will never be a better podcast

Plante, a book rec for you-- Between Two Fires by Christopher Buehlman. It's got all those Catholic themes you love, plus the aesthetics of A Plague Tale. I'm only about halfway through, but I'm really enjoying it (and the cover is sick!)

Justin, you recommended The Appeal by Janice Hallett awhile back and I gotta say thanks! I've been on an epistolary book binge since then. Have you read any of her other books?

I am so glad you mentioned Tiny Wings! It's no only one of the best OG iOS games, but completing Island 4 in Fever mode is arguably my greatest gaming achievement.

I’m glad you guys talked about Tales of Kenzara! I know Abu through Haunted City, a Glass Cannon Network podcast. I help moderate their discord and he’s been talking about his game on there. He also seems like just a nice dude. He also was in an episode of The Glass Cannon Network’s show called Friends of the Pod where they played an early version of the Assassin’s Creed TTRPG where he reprised Bayek https://youtu.be/5pIGhBtRZN0?si=195zjO1EZ7s6h6CG https://youtu.be/tODWpad63CM?si=7mh3sh6LcENj1WtO

The answer to “who is the target audience?” is probably me specifically. I had written off dark souls and the genre as a whole really as not being for me. I’m not big on horror in general so the aesthetic on top of the difficulty and potential to get jumpscared turned me off for a real long time. Then one day a reviewer I liked, Somecallmejohnny, reviewed the dark souls remaster and in watching that I realized a detail that I had not previously been aware of. The rpg elements. The only thing I had heard and seen of the gameplay was how hard it was and the action of it. The dodging and attacking etc. I had figured it was more purely an action game. But the way he detailed the rpg elements had me intrigued, I hadn’t seen a system so granular in that way in a game. It wasn’t enough to get me on that game, but it did interest me enough to be aware of Elden ring when that became the biggest thing in the world. And it was really fun, I liked it a lot, it even interested my cozy gamer girlfriend enough to play like 85% of it. But it was still that dark, grim, gorey aesthetic that I can appreciate but just wasn’t my favorite. And it seemed to be married to the gameplay, dark souls, bloodborne, lies of p… I wanted this game but through the colorful lens of a Zelda. And people recommended Tunic, and I do still want to get to that eventually, but it seemed more focused on the puzzle/mystery elements than the rpg I wanted it to be. And so I was asking basically for a game just like Another Crab’s Treasure. It seems to be fairly close to that combo I’m asking for. Maybe not as heavy on the RPG as I might have liked, but still proof that this game can work and still retain its difficulty without being the one singular aesthetic. And that the accessibility features existing don’t have to take away from that either.

I was wondering if I should pick this up for the weekend, after finishing Lies of P I’ve been hungering for another quality souls-like romp. Also note typo: it’s the “Friends” per second podcast!

Hello all. I'd like to bring up the subject of last week's episode as it relates to Amazon. For anyone that does not know Amazon, Trader Joe's, and Space X have been engaged in not only regular terrible treatment of workers, but actual union busting going as far as to claim that the National Labor Relations Board is unconstitutional.

https://apnews.com/article/amazon-nlrb-unconstitutional-union-labor-459331e9b77f5be0e5202c147654993e

I get it. I love Fallout too. I would really love to watch the show because I keep hearing great things. But as a proud member of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers (IBEW local 68) I cannot in good conscience pay for a Prime Video subscription. I, personally, started to boycott Amazon and Trader Joe's some years ago. If you're concerned about corporate abuse of workers and our legal right to unionize I urge you to do the same.

Good for you, man. Your life will not be so improved by one tv show that it’s worth compromising your values

I'm interested in hearing about No Rest for the Wicked but I do hope you touch on the allegations of abuse and crunch at Moon Studios. So much coverage of this game feels like it sweeps this under the rug,

Came here to say the same thing! The article from VentureBeat in 2022 is pretty detailed on how things seem to be handled poorly at the company. There's a section that also talks about their "New Game" which is addressing some issues with No Rest for the Wicked. With the number of patches they've already released since the game came out in early access, I can only imagine how bad the crunch is for the devs already. But I agree that doesn't mean the game shouldn't be talked about!

I feel very seen by the iCloud storage convo at the top. I’ve been getting harassed by Apple since a couple months after my kid was born - you start burning through storage *real* quick once you get a baby or pet and it’s hard to curate.

Also, is Plante saying he just deletes vast swathes of dozens of photos at a time without checking which ones he likes? If so, isn’t he the sociopath then?

Good question:

I put everything on Google Photos so I don't have to worry about iCloud, than batch delete

Also, surprised that Russ hadn’t heard of ToZ:Z considering it’s been making the rounds in games media leading up to and following its release this week and it had a pretty high profile reveal at the TGAs last year.

Still, I’m playing it now and it’s fun and touching, if not revolutionary. If you’ve got PS Plus Extra, it’s included in the Game Catalogue (PlayStation’s game pass, basically)! It launched Day One included and so will Animal Well on May 8th!

RIP Roll7. Griffin's hype of Olli Olli World got me playing it on my commute the last few months. It is by far one of the highest fun-per-minute gaming experiences I've had this year. I'll see my cumulative playtime every time I exit and think, "that's it??" because of how much fun I've had and I'm definitely in a great mood walking into work.
