I'd just like the chime in on video game soundtrack... Citizen Sleeper's soundtrack is something I still think about and go back to listen to...I love it. And it really adds to the game's theming beautifully.

I'll say Disco Elysium! I think Sea Power set the tone so perfectly for that game. All I have to do is hear those horns start to go for .5 seconds and I'm instantly right back in Revachol. And also I'd like to thank the person who uploaded "Whirling in Rags 12 PM - 2 hour loop" to Youtube for helping me sleep when it's really tough out there.

DE is also great, and Whirling In Rags is a banger.

Citizen Sleeper’s soundtrack is soo good!

(If you aren’t already a fan of Boards of Canada, you might check them out; CS’s soundtrack reminded me of them a lot. “Signal Haze” could practically be a track off their album Geogaddi.)

Marskye’s soundtrack for Boyfriend Dungeon topped my Spotify “year in review” last year. It’s still so good!

I honestly can’t get enough of the sound track for Unpacking. So relaxing, great vibes.

Yooooo we need a new part of the opening routine where Griff does voice impressions of whatever game is on this week. THOSE WERE SO GOOD!

So happy to hear someone recommend slice and dice, was going to myself after playing the update this past week. I've played it off and on for a year and loves the insane amount of different game modes and game modifiers. Absolutely perfect mobile game to just pick up and put down at a moments notice, and also really scratches that crunchy rouge like itch.

It's great. It is my current go to mobile game for random moments.

Same, been really getting back into it after the update. Can totally see it being a game Griff and Justin get absolutely sucked into.

hey guys. I've got a tip if you want to mess around in the character creator for dragon's dogma.

there is a stand alone character creator (at least on PS5) where as the title suggests you can just make characters. it was part of the promo for the game and is completely free.

If companies continually release games in an unfinished/unplayable state, with the expectation to finish them later, why do we keep buying them day 1?

Expand full comment

I think the last 3 games I bought at launch were all first party Nintendo (Pikmin, TotK, BotW). They might be the last company to actually finish their games before they ship...

Have you guys ever done a section on best in-game games? I've really been enjoying Queen's Blood in FFVII Rebirth. Are there other games that have in-universe games?

This would be a fun topic for an episode. In the meantime, here's a list Plante, Frushtick, and Polygon folks put together! https://www.polygon.com/gaming/24086531/best-minigames-video-games-list

Balatro talk was interesting.... I won my first 3 runs after the tutorial. I think it's a math thing maybe? I'm not good at games but I love math.

I’m playing as an archer and honestly I don’t think it’s a bad way to go. I get what Russ was saying but it really didn’t bother me. That said I made my main pawn a fighter.

Expand full comment

Same! Archer was a pretty fun start, getting to mess around with the flying kicks and the trick shots (though I fell into a rut of only spamming the dire and heavenly shots after a while). But I recently switched to mystic spearhand and it's just so fun!

Thank you so much for the Sign of Affection recommendation. My wife has bounced off of every anime I try to get her to watch (have not tried Ghibli because my heart could not stand that rejection), and being on the outskirts of the deaf community I think this one might just stick! Also sick NY Giraffe tattoo

We finally got around to scavengers reign from griffins reccomendation, theres really nothing like it that I've seen. Not for everyone for sure, but certainly monumentous

Agreed, Scavengers Reign is unique, and something I look forward to seeing again.

My partner also liked Sign of affection.

Just wanted to share my tip on how I’ve gotten dragons dogma 2 to play reliably on my steam deck. Using Steam link from my PC, I’ve set it to play in window mode with decent (but not high quality) settings. The smaller window on the PC shows up on my deck as full screen and while giving my laptop a fighting chance at maintaining 60fps most of the time.

I wanted someone to defend FF7 Rebirth like Chris defended Dragon's Dogma. Nonetheless, I hope any of y'all who have continued with Rebirth like it a lot more now; it's everything and more I hoped for as a huge FF7 fan! I think a lot of love was put into the game, and the characters come to life so well. Whether your views have changed or stayed the same, I want to hear you talk about it more!

I only played about 10 hours of the original ffvii, I plan on getting to the remakes when they're all finished and buttoned up on pc. I just cant force myself to play the original

I’m honestly surprised they don’t seem to like it. I can dream that it makes it out of the first round but it seems unlikely.

I was on the side of a mountain fighting a cyclops when a harpy that I normally would've been able to obliterate picked me up and threw me off the mountain. And I loved it. For me, it exemplifies the chaos of combat in this game. Also, I definitely have gotten the vibe in general that if someone didn't like the first game they probably won't like this one. I also agree with Plante, the quests mainly feel like a way to get you out into the world, there have been so many times where all I had to do was go point A to point B but instead I found a village shrouded in fog and an ancient shrine with a sphinx in it. 10/10 game. Might be my goty

On the subject of soundtracks, I wanna shout out outer wilds- I’m like griffin when it comes to music, it’s always important to my experience. With outer wilds tho early on I didn’t care for most of the tracks very much, but by the end of the game tunes I used to tune out could make me tear up (the way it changes after you pick up the warp core? Man,) and it also really mirrored my experience if the gameplay and my attachment to this world. It’s not music I would chose to listen to but is some of the best examples of music immersing you into a world

Two things:

1) I was curious about the Dragon's Dogma Dark Arisen price thing, because $30 sounded wild to me too, so I googled it and there's a site where you can see price history of games on steam. It looks like it's been $30 for the base price for a long time... it just frequently goes on sale for ~$5 and was on such a sale not long ago, in February.

2) On game music - the amazing indie VN Slay the Princess has a really great soundtrack/score! It sets the mood super well and at the end of your game it will give you a link to a Spotify playlist of the specific songs you encountered in your playthrough, in the order you encountered them! Really neat little feature for a SUPER good game that you should really check out!

Shout out to whoever suggested Slice and Dice. It's really giving those phenomenal Dicey Elementalist game vibes and I really like it.
