I cleared room 46 in Blue Prince but it still feels like there's so much to do. I only just figured out how the pump room works! And I need to find HUGE sums of money somehow 🤣
One of my runs, I got an experiment that worked add to my allowance somehow I forget the mechanism. Spent the whole run just focusing on it. Felt like an RPG grind mechanic.
Sitting here with a 41 g allowance but only just now fished room 46
I've loved Blue Prince, but I'm feeling like in the "post-game", in order to unravel the last mysteries, there's too much RNG that's keeping me from putting the puzzle pieces together. Like I see the puzzles, know what I need to solve the puzzle, don't get the right combination of items/rooms, and end the run frustrated. I was ready to call this my game of the year, but this is going to be a big strike against it.
I deleted my comment on the other thread, 'cause I realized it was in the wrong entry for this weeks episode-
Hey Besties, do you guys plan on addressing the recent addition of Microsoft (and subsequently gamepass, Activision, and Bethesda,) to the BDS list? I learned about this from listening to Into the Aether and think it’s important to include this in the discourse when folks talk about the new Doom game. I regrettably purchased the Oblivion remake before I knew about Microsoft's addition to BDS and I’m sure there are folks out there in the same situation as I was coming up on the new Doom release.
i was really glad & surprised to hear the bds movement mentioned in a recent episode of besties. i think providing an update on new gaming-related additions to the bds list is really the least they can do. glad to hear other gaming podcasts are also speaking abt this.
despite being happy to hear it mentioned previously, it was weird and disappointing to hear them spend almost more air time describing how they don't think discussing the game is a form of promotion. also not mentioning it until the latter half of the episode after already discussing the game - y'all could at least briefly mention it before diving into game discussion.
ive listened to so damn much of the besties. i'm listening thru the back catalogue and probably get through 3-5 episodes per day. so just want to say im a fan and am invested in seeing the show do well.
Yeah, I was really disappointed to hear their stance on the issue considering they have definitely skipped covering other games or brought up the controversy in the past. It really felt like, "Well, that issue matters and this one doesn't."
I don't know, it just really rubbed me the wrong way.
I’m not saying they necessarily HAVE to follow BDS (although I think they should) and themselves boycott Microsoft for the show, but they just didn’t even do the least they could have and then their reason sounded like an after-the-fact excuse.
Obviously this isn’t “cancel these fools!!!” criteria lol but I don’t think it was great
Oh HECK yes someone brought up Robocop. Absolutely banger game. We need more single A games like that. I can’t wait for the standalone expansion this summer.
To add on re: Expedition 33, which is to be clear the most fun I’ve had playing a game in at least a year, 1) yes the playtime is much shorter than the RPGs it’s inspired by which is such a relief for me, and 2) the narrative is so strong in this one and it’s so much better than so many other games, regardless of genre, because it doesn’t do the video game original sin of exposition dumping. Instead, it leads with its characters and their relationships and, at least in my experience, it hooked me with so much of what people didn’t say to each other and everything that was going on between characters under the surface.
And yes the combat is addictive and engaging and I get upset by how fast some fights are because I don’t get to pull off the sick effect synergies I’m planning on
Hi. I enjoy woodworking, and enjoyed Justin's woodworking phase. Any chance there might be some arcade related project, maybe making a wooden cabinet or something, that could result in switching tracks back to woodworking?
I agree with you guys that a game does not have to be a certain length to justify the price.
But on the other hand "gestures broadly at the economy"
i really want to play Indiana jones on PS5, but I just can't justify 80 euro for a 20 hour game. I'll just wait until the price drops though, I can be patient.
Presumably a bit late after the episode and not the best forum but has anyone else checked out "Siege and the Sandfox" that just released?
Just happened upon it and since it looked intriguing, checked it out:
A metroidvania with a sort of a sumptuous and well crafted 16bit look with a modern flair (made in UE4) - sort of like Animal Well does but with a different style. Framed by an intermittent narrator and more than a little evocation of the older PoP in theming etc.
Thought it looked familiar and realized it had been in development since like the mid 2010s and at least the intro/first section seems promising - beautiful, well considered, feels good and so far its living up to its claimed genre as a "Stealthvania" (e.g. no killing guards - just disabling them by knocking them out, trying to avoid enemies rather than charging in etc).
After a quick search it sounds like there's maybe some tweaking to be done but if they've been at it this long that shouldn't be insurmontable
Since the vibes are good and the story so far is neither infuriating (if not original) or inane I'll keep playing at least and thought maybe others would be interested too. Given the long development it isn't surprising that it doesn't seem to be top of mind for many people or at least not talked about much in podcast form... ;)
Understandable if there's still some refractory time left for the genre but it's worth a look for the art and aesthetic alone if nothing else IMHO. Plus, it's pretty cheap, runs well, has a tiny install size and by what I can glean from the map so far it looks to be substantial enough.
Anyway, I'll take my cheeseburger and fries to-go please.
Hey Besties! I am a lifelong Nintendo/PC gamer. Recently I was confronted with the idea that I needed a new PC rig in order to play the upcoming AAA games on our doorstep (think DOOM The Dark Ages, GTA 6, Witcher 4).
When looking at parts, I had a realization that Bitcoin miners have priced me out of the GPU market. Looking for the best value for my buck, I bought a PS5.
As someone who has not owned a PlayStation console since the PS1 (PSX? I never understood that), what games do you recommend? I have a PS+ Premium Subscription, and I am currently playing though Assassin's Creed Origins for the first time and loving it.
If Griffin loves Rift of the necrodancer, he should really try the demo for Unbeatable on steam right now. It’s a Rythym based rpg about a punk band in a world where music is banned and I’m in love with it. It has a wholly original sound track and every track is incredible.
Griffin, I would be careful making claims about hats like that when we are weeks away from more Deltarune. It’s a bold shot to call up against Toby Fox. /lh
It absolutely made my day to hear that there was a new Necrodancer game - I'm obsessed with the OSTs for the first two games and I can't believe I didn't hear about this game coming out sooner! I knew I could count on the Besties to keep me in the loop 🫡
Please tell me they appropriated that Night At The Roxbury-era jam “Rhythm Is A Dancer” as the theme song for Griffin’s game. I’ve been singing 🎶Rift of Necrodancer!🎶 all day.
I had a very different experience with Expedition 33, but I’m not surprised given their love of Souls-likes. Not that it’s a souls-like, but the timing involved in the fights reminds me of those sorts of games (no option to turn it off for enemy hits either. I probably would have stuck with it if I could). I hate the combat, but the story and characters are really good. I got far enough along that i decided since I still didn’t enjoy any of the combat encounters, I’d just go watch a movie version on YouTube. Idk at what point or how you get to be like game-breaking the way Griffin was talking. Just felt like a combination of that last Final Fantasy game and all the action games where enemies repeat the same thing over and over and you have to memorize a rhythm in order to be good at it. Anyway, I haven’t finished watching the movie version, but it’s still really good so far!
Justin are you still woodworking? I'm getting my woodshop set up and i picked up an old craftsman wood lathe for like 150 bucks. Woodworking is kinda like gaming if you think about it.

Clair Obscura is next on my list. Probably. 🤔

Honestly that's been my biggest concern. But I haven't hit that point as of 20ish hours in yet. 🤞🏻

The eventual Doom episode should be titled DooMMMBop.

Love these kinds of episodes, tysm
Also hell yeah to the wilmot games, originally heard of them from FotS Brandon Bigley over at Into the Aether!
