Oh hello Besties buds, it’s Plante!
I have exciting news for listeners in Southern California: I’m hosting a monthly movie series at the Frida Cinema in Santa Ana. We’re calling the project Hallucinations and it begins on Wednesday, January 29th with a screening of a restoration of Cannibal: The Musical — the musical the South Park guys made years before Team America and Book of Mormon.
Here’s my pitch for Hallucinations:
Hosted by Polygon’s editor-in-chief Chris Plante, Hallucinations is a monthly event that spotlights movies that challenge our expectations of story, style, and “good taste”. Plante will introduce each film with some behind-the-scenes history and critical context. With Hallucinations, The Frida Cinema wants to build a communal space for lovers of Weird Cinema. We invite guests to bond over films that change what we expect from the medium, the world, and themselves. So come early, stay late, make friends, and watch something strange, surprising, or just shamelessly sick.
Or to put it another way: I think it’s increasingly challenging for grown-ups to make friends in the real world. In 2025, I want to create safe and fun environments where people can meet and chat about their shared interests.
I hope to see some of y’all there. If you do attend, please say hello! You can order tickets for the Cannibal screening here.
I am so excited that someone else knows Cannibal! The Musical! I’ve had the dvd since like 2004, and my friends used to host watch parties to introduce it to people. I ADORE the movie, and you can see a lot of inspirations in the movie for later South Park gags. HIGHLY recommend the DVD commentary, as Matt and Trey get progressively drunker and incoherent. Best luck with the screening!
That’s rad. It is hard to make friends in real life. Happy new year everybody.
