Did y'all hear about the creator of Stardew saying he'd only sell the movie rights to either Studio Ghibli (makes sense) or DAVID LYNCH? I would 100000000% watch either version honestly....

First off, happy birthday Justin! Secondly, I agree wholeheartedly with Justin about Chants of Sennaar. That game is spectacular and I wish I could erase it from my mind so I could play it all over again. On that vein, do you guys have any other puzzle games you’d recommend, especially ones with unusual mechanics like chants of sennaar?

(Also I saw someone on tiktok call it “the dark souls of duolingo and I think that’s hilarious)

Obligatory recommendation for Return of the Obra Dinn. I'm willing to bet you've already played it, but on the off chance you haven't, do so immediately.

Obra dinn was incredible, unfortunately I am not smart enough to finish it without Google up but god damn it was one of a kind

i gotta be honest, i would’ve put up with WAY more talk about MGS3! The whole series is so fascinating and it’s always interesting to hear about which elements completely turn people away while clicking for others. I’ll also happily request an MGS4 episode down the line. I think to this day i’ve never been more hyped for a release, even though i’d never played a metal gear game before. I was newly a teenager ready to play A Very Serious Game About War, and i can still practically quote the “war has changed” trailer from memory. I was all prepared to put on my octocamo and slink around a battlefield with all the freedom of a tier 5 operator or whatever. And then i played it. I don’t think i ever made it past the first boss. And then i tried the multiplayer which was a baffling disaster. This retrospective is making me think about busting out my pS3 and my hard copy and seeing how i feel about it now that i’m infinitely more familiar with the series and Kojima in general.

I dug the shit out of this game when I first played in 2017 ish. I was in Scouts and genuinely thought that how they gamified first aid was a really cool idea. The order of operations for cleaning up wounds was a fun system that I wish more games picked up. On top of that, if you let the wounds heal naturally you actually gain a little bit of max health! It's a shame that y'all didn't enjoy it as much as I did but I get it.

Hey Besties and Besties buddies,

Anyone have any recommendations for good 5-player co-op games? My gaming group is a group of 5 and we've been cursed/blessed with a wealth of great 4 player co-op games that usually leaves one of us watching the others stream rather than joining on the fun.

Thanks!

We talk about a good option on the upcoming Resties episode: KarmaZoo!

i assume Mario Kart or Party is out of the question? I guess those aren’t really co-op. It’s a shame the typical cooperative experience always stops at 4, especially when you consider it’s an archaic holdover from the days where consoles only had 4 controller ports.

Question for Russ:

I feel like i have a handle on what kind of games The Besties are into except for you. Griffin likes a JRPG, Plante likes reading and Justin exclusively plays FMV games.

It seems that you've got time for most genres and experiences but I'm interested to know what your all time favourites are and what it is that you look for in a game that specifically floats your boat?

Thanks for the endless hours of entertainment!

The biggest reason that I prefer the Asus ROG Ally over the Steam Deck is the easy access to Game Pass without jumping through hoops. Also the button and stick layout on the Ally is a lot easier on the hands for me.

I've been feeling so much FOMO with all these limited drops before Black Friday. My wife just looked at me blankly when I showed her the Deck OLED

Count me as one vote for more Metal Gear Solid on slow weeks! Never played the games but enjoy it from a "history of gaming" perspective.

I am a week behind so he might have talked about it but Griffin NEEDS to play Chained Echoes. Probably my favorite gaming experience last year. So very special. It is a love letter to the SNES era of JRPGs while being its own thing as well. Perfect blend of classic and modern with a very thoughtful leveling system and combat mechanics that are always engaging.

Ya'll should check out Halls of Torment. It's Vampire Survivors, but in the style of Diablo 2, with some fun progression hooks.

Also will there be an episode on Super Mario RPG?

I have a hard time imagining that Plante doesn't realize that the Yakuza games have always been called Ryū ga Gotoku (Like a Dragon) in Japan and Sega changed it to Yakuza ages ago out of a lack of faith in the original title. They've just changed it to the real title now because the games are getting away from telling yakuza stories.

Expand full comment

They did actually talked about that when Yakuza: Like a Dragon came out.
