I think I've mentioned it before, but have any of you played The Roottrees Are Dead? It's a free browser-based UI not-actually-RPG mystery/puzzle game taking some cues from things like Her Story and Golden Idol https://jjohnstongames.itch.io/the-roottrees-are-dead
Great game! Some people might be put off of it because is uses AI-generated images BUT GOOD NEWS the dev is working on a new edition with none of that nonsense in it!
(Actually the original game is one of the few instances where AI images didn't bother me, because art style is intended to look like bad photographs, rather than ripping off illustrators. But good on the dev for remaking it with actual human art)
It was probably just a joke, but I gotta stomp it every time someone says it: They WERE NOT dead the whole time on Lost. It wasn't the case then, it's not the case now.
I thought I remember controversy surrounding the 2008 lost video game unintentionally having show spoilers but now I can't find anything about it. Does anyone remember anything like that?
If it’s a joke it’s the single most consistent bit the good boys have ever done. I won’t hold my breath for a prestige reveal.
(But yes- every time they get it wrong I worry about media literacy’s fight against memes. It’s fun to make fun of Lost having no ending planned at the beginning, but the rewriting of history drives me crazy)
I need to throw in my suggestion for the best game to play on the bike: Rocket League. It makes you feel like you are doing real sports (with Bryant Gumbel). I find myself pedaling harder to try and make my car go faster. Very fun and addicting.
I would like to humbly suggest The Besties take a look at Shogun Showdown if you haven't already. It gives me slight Slay The Spire vibes with a hint of something like Into the Breach sprinkled in on a much smaller scale.
"humbly"? Buddy, you're in the rarified air of the Patrons now. Your $5 buys you the right to be arrogant, pushy, petulant, and demanding. The Besties work for *us* and don't you let them forget it!
Hey Besties! The convo towards the end of the Grapple Dog sequel discussion was super super interesting. I loved the original and I had this game oh my radar but given how many games there are right now, it completely slipped my mind. Honestly you folks reminding me of it made me purchase it immediately and I honestly felt bad hearing that game had only 56 reviews at time of recording. On some level, I actually felt like I let the game down. I'm currently playing this new tac shooter called Spectre Divide and similarly, I feel like I have to play it more than I normally would because part of me feels like playing the game regularly supports it and keeps it around longer. Do you folks ever feel like that with some titles? I know it's not my responsibility as a consumer but I feel bad seeing games that I like playing die or get shut down because not enough people are playing them.
Enjoyed this episode and an insight into some smaller games! I wanted to drop an indie game recommendation for you - it’s called Caravan SandWitch and it just released this week. I’m really enjoying it so far - so much so that I’ve dropped Star Wars Outlaws for now to focus on it. I also feel that it’s a good game to play with children, as it doesn’t have any combat. I’d compare it to Sable gameplay-wise.
You play as a trainee space pilot who returns to her home planet in search of her missing sister. There she has to navigate abandoned corporate structures, the planet’s native species, and also the people left behind when the corporation left.
The art direction and music are beautiful, and it’s been a really relaxing time. Despite the lack of combat it hasn’t felt like a walking sim at all. I think it will scratch an itch for a few of you lads!
I have a feeling UFO 50 will be less of a "real Wal-mart game" and more one of those bootleg SNES cartridges your friend had that claims to have 1000 games, where most are broken or bad and like 3 are real games.
Has anyone played Visions of Mana? Been curious about that one, but haven't seen it come up much in any of the places I usually look (which is probably saying something, lol)
Gonna shoutout a game for the besties as well as the community. It isn’t the normal besties vibe but I’ve been having a blast with it. Valve’s new game “Deadlock” is in closed beta but you can invite your steam friends and there’s no limitation on the number of invites sent. So it may as well be open beta by this point.
Deadlock can be succinctly described as a MOBA 3rd person shooter. The reason I’m giving the game a shout is that I’ve tried MOBAs before (League and Heroes of the Storm) and bounced off them hard, but I’m having a blast with Deadlock. Something about it being a shooter makes it more accessible. If you queue up with a buddy you’re basically guaranteed to get assigned to the same lane together, so I highly recommend trying it out with a friend.
It certainly won’t be everyone’s cup of tea but if you like anything in the competitive gaming spectrum you might want to give it a shot. There’s 21 heroes so not nearly the same learning curve as the other MOBAs around, and since the game is fresh and there’s no ranked mode I’ve found toxicity to be pretty low.
If anyone in the community wants an invite to the game, give me a shout and we can exchange a steam friend request and I can invite you.
Thanks again! Haven't had much time, but I did get to try out a round. I agree about it being a shooter making it more accessible. Reminds me of the glory days of Monday Night Combat. And I always wonder why, in it's heyday, Overwatch never did a MOBA style mode. Or even if 👀 Battleborn👀 leaned into something more akin to this.
Chris; when you made that joke about the Triplets of Belleville, I said out loud, "Ooooh, that's a deep cut." There are dozens of us who have watched that film-- dozens!!!!
I got the email JUST as Chris made the Triplets of Bellvile joke. Perfect timing 🤣
Wait that new Like a Dragon game looks tight as hell. Majima vs Samoa Joe?!

I went to steam as soon as I listened to Justin describe children of morta and right now it's 75% off!

As the show's Lost head, I think it's a bit. But I also don't have the energy to recap Lost if it isn't. (And I love Lost)
~Plante
yea they all dead
should also mention two of the producers of Lost are actually producing From so that might be the "joke" on the show.
I thought I remember controversy surrounding the 2008 lost video game unintentionally having show spoilers but now I can't find anything about it. Does anyone remember anything like that?

I've only played the demo so far, but I am super impressed with this game - and I'm someone who really struggles to get into most roguelikes

I ended up writing a little about this! https://www.polygon.com/gaming/454111/grapple-dogs-cosmic-canines-impressions

I know they have to talk about Legend of Zelda: Dungeons of Infinity. Really sick link to the past based roguelike game that’s super well done.

One note on Grapple Dogs: you *can* pet the dog, in the level end screen, you can press Y and a floating hand comes in and pets the dog. 🐶✋

I'd love to give it a shot! My steam name is Call Me Ishmael
My friend code is 98217711. Should show up as moosebean. Send a friend request and I’ll send the invite your way later today.
Hey a few weeks delayed, but I'd love to give it a shot as well! My Steam name is alcoholictarzan, just sent you a friend request

My wife and I have made many 'Triplets of Belleville' leg jokes over the years!
What’s the name of the horror docu-series on Shudder that was discussed?
“Horror’s Greatest” 👍🏻
Same question. Was disappointed it was left out of the newsletter!
