This week on The Resties: No Man’s Sky and Shadow Gambit

Listen to the new episode

We rocket into No Man’s Sky after a week of Starfield. Frushtick completed the current version of the game, following its most recent update, and it’s incredible how far this exploration game has come in the past seven years.

For the B-segment, Plante champions Shadow Gambit. This is technically a stealth tactics game, a genre popularized by PC gamers in the early 1990s and then gradually relegated to niche status. But don’t let its uncommon categorization turn you away. So many ideas from other games you love have inspired this underrated gem, from the look of Sea of Thieves to the feel of classic Metal Gear Solid.

Shadow Gambit’s developer Mimimi announced they’d be closing the studio after supporting Shadow Gambit for some time after its release. (The studio also made the excellent Shadow Tactics and Desperadoes 3.) On their company blog, the team wrote: “[D]edicating the past decade and a half of our lives working on increasingly ambitious games took a heavy personal toll on us and our families. After the release of Shadow Gambit we decided it was the right time to prioritize our well-being and to pull the brakes instead of signing up for another multi-year production cycle.”

Are you going to share Russ’s No Man’s Sky custom settings screen?

I’m one of the weirdos that played 100 hours when it was first released and loved it. I’ve never played after any of the updates, so after listening to your Resties episode, I want to start a fresh game to check it out. I’ll be approaching it as if it’s a completely new game and in that spirit, I would love to see Russ’s settings to mimic his quality of life improvements.

I was so sure the new game was going to be Sea of Stars. That said, they're right that Shadow Gambit was a great and addicting surprise. I hadn't played any of Mimimis games before and am digging it a lot.
