Are you going to share Russ’s No Man’s Sky custom settings screen?

I’m one of the weirdos that played 100 hours when it was first released and loved it. I’ve never played after any of the updates, so after listening to your Resties episode, I want to start a fresh game to check it out. I’ll be approaching it as if it’s a completely new game and in that spirit, I would love to see Russ’s settings to mimic his quality of life improvements.

This is what I was wondering too! I've tried NMS several times and always bounced off, usually once I get off the first planet. I'm hoping adjusting some stuff and going for the quests will help

I was so sure the new game was going to be Sea of Stars. That said, they're right that Shadow Gambit was a great and addicting surprise. I hadn't played any of Mimimis games before and am digging it a lot.

I want to thank Chris for all the movie recommendations over the years. At this point if you mention a movie I go watch it as soon as it gets released in my country. I recently loved are you there god it’s me Margaret? and the first slam dunk which I never would have seen if not for you. I’m going to see the dirty dancing musical soon and was wondering if y’all have any favourite musicals for someone just getting into them?

It is sad that Mimimi is shutting down. Desperados 3 was legit one of my favorite games from the genre. I'm playing through Shadow Gambit now and its just as fun. I need to look for similar things from other developers since I have played through most of the Mimimi catalog!

You didn't end up sharing the settings for No Man's Sky that you mentioned in this episode.

As I just noticed it's on Gamepass for Xbox and PC I'm going to give it a go.

I don’t think Starfield’s narrative is as good as The Outer Worlds. Despite it being a relatively smaller game, it is my go-to space RPG. It’s like if Fallout and Starstruck had a baby.

As someone who really wants to get into games like BG3 and Elden ring, but doesn’t have the time for games that are longer than 30ish hours, do y’all have any recommendations?

Just play bg3 or elden ring until you've gotten your enjoyment out of them? You don't have to finish every game you start, I rarely do.

RPGs and fantasy epics tend to lean a little on the... well, epic side of things. Shadow of Mordor is a good ~30hour open world fantasy game, though a little light on the roleplay side of things (seeing as the protagonist is Bland Manpain, a sword dude with a spare ghost in him). The Forgotten City is 10-12hr game originally written as a Skyrim quest mod, so if you want the feeling of playing just a sliver of fantasy RPG, it's not too much of a time-sink.

I don't know if this is the kind of answer you're looking for, but I have found that the Switch and Steam Deck (so portable gaming) has definitely helped when it comes to playing 30+ hour games, especially as a parent with a job, so my gaming time is pretty limited. Being able to play on portable systems has definitely reinvigorated my interest/ability to play PC games after the kid goes to bed and before I fall asleep a few hours later.

Idk if it helps but with these long games, I usually watch playthroughs on YouTube, while eating, so I can still sort of experience it. Plus you can speed it up and sometimes the YouTuber will 'trim the fat' so to speak. Or if you really want to play these games yourself, just do so bit by bit until you beat it, get bored, or hop on something new.

Hey there, love the podcast. Was wondering whether any of the Besties crew (especially Griffin) had looked at Cassette Beasts? It's an excellent indie take on the monster battler genre that really felt like a great twist on some of the best parts of Pokemon.

Now that the boys all seem to agree that No Man's Sky is amazing, I really hope one or more of them will try it in PSVR2. I share many of their annoyances with VR in general, but holy hell NMS in PSVR2 is a revelation. Absolutely mind blowing since this latest update, looks amazing, and is the most immersive experience I've ever had.

On the subject of Stealth Tactics games, Heat Signature is a great game. It's a Sci fi rogue-like where you play missions on precedurally generated starships. Combat is real time and twitchy, but you can pause anytime to plan your next action, turning each room into a Murder-Puzzle. The real star of the game is the gadgets - limited use items that give you powers like freezing time, teleporting, or stripping armor off baddies. It's an old game but the developer releases daily challenges of three increasingly difficult missions to keep things fresh. One of my GOATS.

I’d be interested to hear if Russ or Chris have gone back to play the original Desperados (or played the Commandos games). Desperados 1 had the feature to set up multiple actions which felt like a huge step forward after playing Commandos games. Sad to hear about the D3 dev closing. A new commandos game was announced a few years ago and nothing ever came of it.

Nice, I expected my comment about sonic to touch a nerve, but I got a shout out instead lol. As for suggestions for future series: why not deep dives on certain genre? Like exploring the history of and where we are today on different genre?
