Patreon, hands down. Supporting dozens of creators like that. Would pay separately for Besties and Resties for a nominal gesture of 24hrs early access.
I came here to post the same thing! I don’t know if there’s any sort of reason Griffin and Justin aren’t allowed to have a podcast Patreon due to their other MaxFun podcasts, but Besties/Resties would be my first and ONLY Patreon subscription.
Don’t think that should be a problem. Kirk Hamilton from the TRIPLE CLICK podcast on Max Fun has another podcast called STRONG SONGS that is 100% Patreon supported. It might be more of an issue of having two video game podcasts on the same revenue-sharing network.
1. If you guys had a fucking bake sale, I would show up.
2. I support Maximum fun (is there room at the Inn for Besties?) and The Empty Bowl. I like both of those subscription models.
3. I think a fun way to directly support you (and the games) would be to go to a subscriber-based model where the show stays free-to-listen, and the subscribers ($5/mo?) get to vote on an indie game they'd like to promote/support. You guys would reach out to the game "...hey, our listeners have selected you to have a free 30 second advert on our show, would you like to put something together?". Seems like everyone would benefit.
4. Now that the Resties episodes are going to be largely about Indie-Games, I put forward the Motion to rename these episodes "Indies Nuts"
I'd 100% support a Patreon if you decide to go that route. I would even be fine if it didn't come with any extra content if it means y'all get to keep working on the show so long as you are happy to do so. My only recomendation/request on that front would be to set up Spotify integration if you do.
I think, the way that I've seen a lot of podcasts survive is through the patreon format, it's not invasive, and maybe I'm just new to the besties and I don't know that there's already a patreon or something, but I think people would happily be a part of a patreon. If I was to recommend what that format would look like (Bear in mind, I don't know your editing schedule or when you record these, etc ) I would say $1 tier to get Resties A day early, I've even seen some people put up a $1 tier on patreon just to be like you want to support us, but you can't afford a higher tier which I've done before because I just wanted to see the things I like succeed. Then I would say a $5 tier that lets you hear the rusties and the besties a day early, and then like a $10 tier that has anything extra you could maybe provide, or maybe just as a like hey do you have $10 Do you want to support us tier. I find that patreon is always inoffensive, and has helped a lot of podcasts I know in varying sizes survive with a semi-consistent amount of money. And lets them operate on their own sort of rules, and you can still sell ad spots and make add money but then you've got a more consistent revenue through the patreon. I would happily subscribe to a $5 tier to hear things early, or a $1 tier just to support the podcast. And if I had a more disposable income I would pay more for extras, or even just to support the show because I love what you guys do.
Sorry for the long reply, I work with a lot of internet people from twitch and YouTube and podcasting on how to create a sustainable income so when you said you were open to ideas I was excited to talk about!
I'd definitely pay a few bucks every month to help keep this show running, whether through patreon, ko-fi, whatever. Not super interested in any kind of rewards / exclusive content / early access. I like the community here and I like that we *all* have the opportunity to listen in and discuss around the same time frame. An ad-free feed would be more than enough.
One of the podcasts I support, the bonus content is basically just the pre-show chatter about the lives of the hosts. Its nice, and silly. Exclusive NY Giraffe content, or stories about the games they're getting their kids into, or what criterion rec Plante has, or what YA novel Justin just finished, for sure. jaja. But they have a lot of that already at the end of the pod. But still, it'd be a way to do something 'bonus' without much extra effort, assuming there already is some pre-show non-recorded chatter.
I absolutely will add my voice for a patreon, especially an under-$5 tier with no rewards, or maybe an ad-free feed.
I feel like the Resties has so much aligned with Into the Aether/TWG "podcast network" and the more those two entities are willing to lean into their connection, the better I think both of them would be. Resties already has the vibe of focusing on games (and beyond) that the hosts actually like instead of needing to cover new releases. The series playthrough miniseries match vibes with Asynchronous.
I know truly nothing about podcast economics. And my instinct is that ITA/TWG have a MUCH smaller audience than Besties/Resties. But I do think that people who love the Resties (and maybe prefer the Resties to the Besties) would definitely enjoy ITA. It seems like those folks are trying to grow their show and their network, and maybe it's possible that their patreon/ad support infrastructure could be mutually beneficial. But it's also possible that you are operating on completely different scales of economy. As someone who really enjoys listening to both I would be excited at some sort of ongoing collaboration.
I'd gladly join a Besties/Resties Patreon! For myself, I'd probably just set it and forget it (don't tell Rocket Money) and just be happy to help support you all as creators of a great podcast, perks or ads or both or neither.
I dig the show as a fun listen, and I appreciate hearing about specific games coming out, and I when you sometimes step back and talk Games more generally, I feel inspired in my own creative efforts!
I would also do patreon, even with none exclsuive content. I'd probably be at $5 a month tier or less for something like that. Some patreons also give you the option to get a slight discount for paying for a year upfront, which i tend to do as well.
Since I like the Besties so much, I'd consider a higher tier with pay walled content, but you would need to be consistent with the effort, and as long as there is good effort, I'd go slightly higher.
I support mostly podcasts on patreon, aside from a couple of YT channels, so it's my wheel house.
Couldn’t agree more. I think Breaking Bad was a character portrait of a self destructive narcissist and way outstayed its welcome (though it ended strongly, for the most part), whereas every minute of Better Call Saul was just…Shakespearean tragedy in its finest form. I wasn’t even going to watch it because I didn’t like Breaking Bad, but a few of my law school friends convinced me to give it a try and I was hooked immediately.
Exactly! I was hesitant to watch it because I had grown very disenchanted with Breaking Bad over the years, but I'm so glad I gave it a shot. It's on a different level.
Wondering with FF7 rebirth coming out, Griffin (being the big Final Fantasy fan) as well as the rest of the crew would be willing to list what Final Fantasy games are actually worth playing for someone who never really got into the franchise until now? Played Remake and can't wait for the series to continue. Have heard great things about VI and X as well, so thinking about starting there. Thanks!
Also also, maybe some guests that talk about other genres could be good? Especially low hanging guests, like day Clayton Ashley from polygon to talk about simulation or strategy ganes. Or Simone de Rochefort also from polygon, to talk about goodness knows what type of game. Or if you feel especially out going, reaching out to like Quill18.
A lot of people have been suggesting the Patreon as a option. I also agree with that. I am not someone who supports on patreon regularly. But this being one of my fav shows each week. I would happily support. Other ways to grow / support the show. Maybe a resties like live stream on yt or twitch. I would show up to those, support with sub etc.
Make a patreon also please check out Shotgun King, it’s a chess roguelite where you play as a king with only a shotgun. Between each level you pick a set of two cards, one gives an upgrade and one increases the difficulty of future levels.
Shotgun King is great. when my kid (3.5 y/o) is with me at my computer, he'll ask to play the "King Game" and he'll sit through about one game; henlikes it when some cards turn to skulls.
I'm also not sure how/when to tell him that this isn't how real Chess is played, or that this is just heavily modified Chess. I'm sure we'll figure it out.
I've gotten nearly all my indie game recommendations from the besties/resties, aside from a few random games from say polygon or other creators that play genres not covered here (e.g. Simulation). But I'm not sure i would have come across Norco, or Inscryption, or a myriad of other interesting games without the source and trusted recs.
Patreon, hands down. Supporting dozens of creators like that. Would pay separately for Besties and Resties for a nominal gesture of 24hrs early access.
I would totally throw a couple bucks their way to continue this. I love The Besties but The Resties is becoming my favorite gaming podcast.
Why is 'hearing it early' a benefit? It's still the same amount of time between episodes. +1 for patreon though.

Have you considered selling New York Giraffe NFT's?
I'd 100% support a Patreon if you decide to go that route. I would even be fine if it didn't come with any extra content if it means y'all get to keep working on the show so long as you are happy to do so. My only recomendation/request on that front would be to set up Spotify integration if you do.
Good flag on Spotify integration!
I think a Resties OF is the way to go.
Send egg steam pica
Earwax me
I would definitely buy a sexy Fireman-esque calendar of the Besties.

I agree. For me, bonus content is secondary to just being able to support creators I enjoy listening to or watching.

Russ is correct - Better Call Saul is objectively better than Breaking Bad, but it got MAYBE a tenth of the attention.
Couldn’t agree more. I played it for a while. It was a fun diversion for a while, then I lost interest, didn't hold it for very long.
I think they’re still actively working on updates for it, I just think it is a neat idea and is easy to pick up and play.
