justin starting to list all of the "mainline" mario games instantly reminded me of the jan misali videos on this topic... if you've got two and a half hours to spare, they're very much worth it

I also came here to leave this exact comment. The 2.5 hour run time may be daunting but you can get the point of their argument pretty soon into that and there's good jokes and it's overall just an impressive video that bridges linguistics, math, and video games. Really do give it a shot! It's pretty unique content which I feel is rare with stuff about video games sometimes.

After the Star Wars Hotel documentary recommendation a few weeks ago and the Rage one this week, I came here looking for more deep dive YouTube videos. This is great! Would welcome any other suggestions.

On the topic of 3rd games that could use ports/remasters, I offer kid Icarus uprising for your consideration. That game with normal controls sounds amazing (though maybe too easy; they would need to tune a few things). Also that Mario game (3D land I think?)

On the topic of 2024’s overlooked games (that are extremely NOT besties material): eiyuden chronicle is essentially a brand new suikoden game. It had a pretty rough launch but it is one of the best kickstarter games I’ve played in feeling like an organic follow up and not just pure nostalgia.

I literally came to the comments to mention kid Icarus uprising. It's my favorite game on 3ds and it isn't close.

It’s criminal that the besties haven’t put at least some effort into risk of rain 2 playing as a group of 2-4 really makes that game shine

There's one and only one DS game I desperately need to somehow make it to Switch:

Dragon Quest Heroes: Rocket Slime

A simple game with GamePro 5.0 Fun Factor. My favorite DS game and one of my top 10 all time games.

Have any of y'all played Ghostrunner or Ghostrunner 2? The second game came out in October last year and I have a real soft spot for these games. They aren't going to be games that tell awesome deep stories but are more like DMC5 - a video game that knows it's a video game so it just enjoys and leans into that. It's a fast paced, first person, very difficult action platformer. Highly recommend giving it a go

For grab bag games:

Dread Delusion - modern Morrowind with extra weird

Yellow Taxi Goes Vroom - Crazy Taxi x Mario 64 where you play as a wind up taxi and do platforming!

Having beaten Infinite Wealth, Animal Well, and the Elden Ring DLC, Songs of Conquest is easily my game of the year so far. I've been waiting for the game to truly innovate on and improve the Heroes of Might and Magic formula since 1999 and this game is more than I could have hoped for. It's a weird take on a strategy game and might not be y'all's cup of tea exactly, but I think it's worth checking out for the presentation alone. The soundtrack kicks ass too.

The thing about Luigi is that he's equally scared of everything, which means he can deal with the truly scary monsters as easily as the "scary" bug in his kitchen

Re: Justin mentioning The zero escape not being something he could play on the TV, two of my friends and I have been getting into the series and it’s been great to have on the TV or huddle around a laptop as a group activity, having multiple minds working on the puzzles and guessing what wild twist will come next. Because I have not been able to be there for every play session because of work, I’ve let myself look up spoilers on the wiki, which make it fun hearing them guess twists or complain about things that have a reason revealed later (They hate that Sigma isn’t shown or voiced to the point that they pulled up an image of his box art to put next to the screen. But I know. 😉)

I'm mildly surprised that nobody acknowledged the fact that the Besties did half an episode on the original Luigi's Mansion: Dark Moon (Ep 50). However, I'm absolutely shocked to my core that nobody commented on Russ mispronouncing Mario at 33:00.

Atlus could keep driving that Persona train and bring the Persona Q games over, as well as Shin Megami Tensei IV and Devil Survivor.

I really want someone to make a smartphone with the 3DS's form factor. We have folding smartphones now! we have smartphones with built-in styluses! I think the technology is all there. The DS made for so many interesting games that just don't make as much sense on any of the mainstream modern options, and I want developers to have a reason to make more games like that. Plus I wish i could play games on my phone without having to use a virtual joystick or a 3rd party peripheral.

A great game I’d love to hear y'all discuss in the 2024 recap is Yellow Taxi Goes Vroom. Probably one of my favorite indie games this year so far.
