2024 predictions:
Return of the classics: Three franchises that haven’t had a mainline entry in at least five years will return. Their publishers will announce new titles. (This excludes games already announced, like Metroid and Prince of Persia.)
We haven’t even heard the name of 2024’s game of the year yet: The game most publications award game of the year has yet to be formally announced. Or if it is public, it's not from an existing franchise.
Xbox shows its hand: We will see gameplay from at least two of these five games: Everwild, Contraband, Perfect Dark, Avowed, and South of Midnight. At least one of them will launch before the end of the year.
Silent Hill will be relevant again: Either Silent Hill 2 or the new Silent Hill title will be released and score above 80 on Metacritic.
Bobby Kotick has a new executive job before the end of the year: Simple as that.
Border-bomb: The Borderlands movie will have a Rotten on Rotten Tomatoes and at least one outlet will question Hollywood’s rush to adapt video games.
Switch goes for two: The Nintendo Switch 2 will have at least one other iconic IP in its first three months, not including Metroid.
Control of Remedy: Epic, Sony, or Microsoft will acquire Remedy.
Japan consolidates: Capcom, Square Enix, Konami, Bandai Namco, or Sega will be acquired — or at least the acquisition process will begin.
LIV Games: In a continued effort to rehabilitate its image through global entertainment, a fund from Saudi Arabia will push into games in a big way that will cause tremendous controversy and calls for boycotts.
StadiaTube: YouTube will enter the gaming space. People will have tools to publish games directly onto YouTube, either through streaming or local play. (Bonus: The tool will feature easy streaming functionality.)
Steam engine: A handheld not made by Valve will launch with native SteamOS support.
Fortnite grows: Fortnite will drop one more standalone mode akin to Lego, Rocket Racing, or Fortnite Festival before the end of the year. Developed by Epic or a studio Epic owns. This can't be a one-off "experience" like the Alan Wake thing.
Switch drift: Nintendo will make some public reference to the durability of the Switch 2 analog sticks in either marketing materials or an official press release. An interview doesn't count.
Hoarding Hades: Hades 2 will have a horde/survival mode (i.e. instead of going room to room you will have to survive against waves a la Vampire Survivors or more traditional horde/survival modes).
Hello Knight: Hollow Knight Silksong will come out and let you play as a character other than Hornet. And this character has to be genuinely playable and not a rideable character. According to Frush: “Hornet cannot be near the other playable character.”
Other stuff discussed:
The film Thief from Michael Mann, the game Sanabi by Wonder Potion
